Mark Smith, Procurement Vice President, Digital & Talent Supply at integrated energy company bp plc., is a strategy and transformation expert with an impressive background in business enhancement at Shell, Accenture, Babcock International and of course, bp. He believes that talent will reshape the future role and perception of procurement into what will be a more self-serve and business-enabling process.

“I’ve always been interested in the architecture of procurement,” he says, “where the function is going and how we bring the right mix of technology, people and mindsets together to make the best possible contribution to the business that procurement can make," he shares his thoughts and vision for procurement in this CPO practitioner series.

Alex Klein, COO and Co-Founder at Efficio Consulting, says that’s why the CPO must be given broader influence. To the wider organization, procurement — for too long — has been seen and treated as a back-office function. Without getting too technical, this is largely because, at face value, it is just not an exciting or seductive part of the business. It’s seen as the culmination of administrative effort and has subsequently suffered from being part of a vicious cycle in which it doesn’t have the platform to prove its worth, and therefore can’t flex its muscles enough to earn a more prominent pedestal.

Alex develops some ideas from his new book "Profit from Procurement: How to add 30% to Your Bottom Line by Breaking Down Silos."

“The truth is many companies have been gathering data that could be used to measure social impact for more than 20 years,” said Greta Matos, a responsible supply chain specialist at &Wider, which helps bridge the gap between workers in the field and the employers or suppliers that engage them. “They are just not used to looking at that data through the lens of impact — they are used to looking at it through the lens of risk.”
