Spend Friends podcast: Bayer’s Thomas Udesen on why ESG is a ‘must have’

While procurement may be about winning deals and negotiating against your competition, one area where it’s best to collaborate with your foes is in sustainability. That’s whatThomas Udesen, the Chief Procurement Officer of Bayer, recommends for procurement professionals looking to be more sustainable.

Udesen was the latest guest on Spend Friends, a monthly video podcast hosted by Bill Michels, the VP of Operations — Americas at CIPS USA, and Pierre Mitchell, Spend Matters’ Chief Research Officer. Its goal is to focus on all procurement matters under the sun, like spend management, supply chains and other topics.

The subject of the agenda for August was sustainability, much like the Spend Matters’ summerESG series. Udesen joined Michels and Mitchell to discuss what role procurement should play in promoting sustainability at an organizational level.

That process got former plumber Jaeson Cardiff thinking. The former plumber and tradesman realized he could use carbon emissions from commercial buildings to create new chemicals. And those chemicals could go into other products that are used every day. With those chemicals and emissions, he and some colleagues founded CleanO2.

The company is a personal care product company that uses captured carbon emissions from commercial buildings that are repurposed into cleaning and other personal products. It takes waste to regenerate new products, leaving the environment a little cleaner than it was before.
